Hey, so did you grab VLC yet? Yeah, that's probably a great idea. It's not what this column is about or anything, but as a Mac|Life PSA I'm just suggesting you do so while you can. Click here. It's OK. We'll wait.

Now that we've cleared that up, let's talk about your mobile note-taking skills. Sure, there are many brilliant options out there to take down your thoughts, and while many exceed the utility of paper in terms of connectivity, for the most part they do not actually exceed the boundaries of their paper brethren. Enter Grid by Binary Thumb, a place where ideas are conceived and plans are made using a tile format.

Anyone familiar with anything Microsoft has cooked up in the past few years knows about its tiles. Grid combines the look of those tiles with the design of a spreadsheet. After you create a square, simply slide up to determine what kind of square you want it to be. Have a location in mind? You can slide a map right in there. A picture or text appropriate for the concept you're trying to get across? That's no problem either. Finally, if you want to add anyone from your contact list directly to your grid, you can do that too.

After you lay down your plans, you can share your grids with others and make it a collaborative project. In fact, we should all make a collaborative grid on the best way to tell people to download VLC now.

Click here to download Grid from iTunes.
